Opus One Premieres
with Festival Napa Valley Yang Bao's Sol One
for Piano and Orchestra with immersive sound installation

“Sol One” is a site-specific composition and sound installation by Yang Bao that imagines humans as an interplanetary species exploring the profound connections we share with our planet and the universe. Best known for his concept of “Infinity Music,” Yang Bao transforms Opus One Winery into an immersive soundscape where music is experienced as an ever-morphing soundmass depending on the spatial location of each audience.

The program begins with Bao’s sound installation. It is a choir of the past, the present and the future for all living and non-living things coexisting on our planet Earth. As music echoes throughout the landscape, his chance-based composition constantly composes itself and undergoes infinite metamorphosis with each subtle and incremental alteration. Sound is no longer trapped in linear time, but exists here and now in every unpredictable slice of time.

Following the sound installation, Yang Bao will premiere his composition “Sol One - Rhapsody for Piano and Strings.” It imagines humans’ first day on Mars as the Earth becomes increasingly uninhabitable due to climate change. By delving into the Martian landscape—the sandstorms, the mountains and the new horizons—Yang Bao seeks to draw attention to our relationship with nature and rethink our place in the broader universe.
