Pre-Visit Mini Lesson What is an orchestra?

Part 1 of 2 — Approximately 15 minutes


Materials 


Introduction (5 minutes)

  • Explain to the class that a special guest will be coming on (date) to provide a music and painting workshop. To get ready, they are going to learn about the orchestra!
     
  • Ask students: What is an orchestra? After some discussion, move to activity.


Activity (6 minutes)

  • Play “Classics for Kids” for the class.
     
  • Teaching tip: Make certain the volume is loud enough for all to hear and students are listening carefully, without distractions.


Closing (2 minutes)

  • After listening, it’s time for a quick review.
     
  • Ask students:
     
    1. What are the instrument families / sections in an orchestra? (A: woodwinds, brass, percussion, strings)


Part 2 of 2 — Approximately 15 minutes


Materials 

Introduction (2 minutes)

  • Explain to the class that they are going to continue learning about the instruments and sections of an orchestra today.
     
  • Review with students. Who remembers the four instrument sections of the orchestra?  (A: woodwinds, brass, percussion, strings)
     
  • What is the orchestra conductor’s job?


Activity (6 minutes)

  • Play play “Classics for Kids” part 2 for the class.
     
  • Teaching tip: Make certain the volume is loud enough for all to hear and students are listening carefully, without distractions.
     

Closing (5 minutes)

  • After listening, it’s time for a quick review.
     
  • Ask students:
    1. Which instrument sections of the orchestra did you learn about today?
       
    2. What instrument would you like to play (when you are in 4th grade)?
       
    3. Would you like to conduct an orchestra some day?
