Julia Tsuchiya-Mayhew, trumpet

Originally from St. Louis, Missouri, Julia Tsuchiya-Mayhew is an active freelance trumpet player in the Washington, D.C. region. Before moving to Maryland, Julia earned her bachelor’s degree in trumpet performance at Northwestern University and freelanced in the Chicago area, with ensembles such as the Civic Orchestra of Chicago, Elmhurst Symphony, and Lake Forest Civic Orchestra. During this time, she also was a member of Origin Brass, a brass quintet that specialized in performing music written by living composers. 

Julia received her master’s degree in trumpet performance from the University of Maryland, where she was a member of the university’s fellowship brass quintet, Terrapin Brass. Through this fellowship, she was a part of outreach programs, coaching young musicians and performing concerts for the community surrounding the university. During the summers, Julia has played in orchestra programs all over the country, such as the National Repertory Orchestra, Pierre Monteux School and Music Festival, Miami Music Festival, Festival Napa Valley, and National Orchestral Institute and Festival. She has also performed as a substitute with the New World Symphony and Symphony of the Potomac.
