The Four Seasons of Napa Valley at Far Niente with Chad Hoopes and Carlo Ponti

Fifteen years ago, Far Niente and Festival Napa Valley began an abiding relationship marked by the marriage of outstanding food, wine, and art. Some of the Festival’s most memorable events have taken place at Far Niente. This year will be no exception.

The brilliant young American violinist Chad Hoopes made his auspicious Festival Napa Valley debut in 2009, at age 14. Now an international soloist, Hoopes returns to perform Vivaldi’s ever-vivid Four Seasons with the Blackburn Academy Orchestra at Far Niente, under the baton of acclaimed conductor Carlo Ponti. A celebrity narrator will voice the libretto, featuring four poems written by Napa Valley high school students. The program will also include Daniel Brewbaker’s evocative Sinfonietta per Sofia, written for Ponti’s mother, Sophia Loren.

The festivities begin in the Cabernet Grill, where guests will gather for small bites paired with Far Niente’s superlative vintages.

Far Niente

Established in 1885, Napa Valley’s Far Niente winery prospered until the onset of Prohibition in 1919, when the winery ceased operation and the buildings and estate were abandoned. Sixty years later, in 1979, the old stone shell of a winery underwent a three-year renovation, which restored the building to its original, 19th century grandeur. During restoration the name, “Far Niente,” which romantically translated means “without a care,” was found carved in stone on the front of the building. Now on the National Register of Historic Places and 100 percent solar powered, Far Niente produces Napa Valley estate bottled Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon wines that are renowned for their consistent house style and ability to evolve with extended age.
