Yumi Hwang-Williams, Concertmaster of the Colorado Symphony since 2000, is an American violinist of exceptional musicianship who is recognized for both her stylish performances of the classics and her commitment to the works of present-day composers. Strings Magazine calls her “a modern Prometheus” and Yumi’s interpretations of concertos by Thomas Adés, Aaron Jay Kernis, Michael Daugherty, Christopher Rouse have earned her critical acclaim. Daniel Kellogg’s Rising Phoenix was composed for Yumi and premiered with the Colorado Symphony in 2016. A world-premier commission of a Double Concerto with percussionist Svet Stoyanov by Christopher Theofanidas is scheduled for spring of 2026.
Yumi has appeared with other major orchestras both in U.S. and abroad, including Symphonies of Cincinnati, Indianapolis, London, Basel (Switzerland), Bruckner Orchestra Linz (Austria), Brno Philharmonic (Czech Republic), with conductors Marin Alsop, Dennis Russell Davies, Paavo Jarvi, Hans Graf, among others.
Yumi’s previous posts include Principal Second Violin of the Cincinnati Symphony, Concertmaster of the Cabrillo Music Festival for 13 summers with Marin Alsop, Guest Concertmaster appearances with Singapore Symphony, National Arts Centre Orchestra, Tucson Symphony, Grant Park Music Festival, and Napa Valley Festival. She continues to play guest violin with the Philadelphia Orchestra, with whom she has a long standing relationship.
Currently, Yumi is Adjunct Violin Professor at the University of Denver, Lamont School of Music and enjoys coaching and mentoring young professionals. She is actively involved in advancing the arts in the community through numerous local concerts, chamber music collaborations, and supporting the symphony.
