Yumi Hwang-Williams, concertmaster of the Colorado Symphony since 2000, is an American violinist of exceptional musicianship. Strings Magazine calls her “a modern Prometheus,” and Yumi’s interpretations of concertos by Thomas Adés, Aaron Jay Kernis, Michael Daugherty, and Christopher Rouse have earned her critical acclaim. Daniel Kellogg’s Rising Phoenix was composed for Yumi, which she premiered with the Colorado Symphony in 2016.
Yumi has appeared with other major orchestras both in the United States and abroad, including the Cincinnati, Indianapolis, London, and Basel Symphonies, as well as the Bruckner Orchestra Linz and Brno Philharmonic. Yumi was previously principal second violin of the Cincinnati Symphony and concertmaster of the Cabrillo Music Festival. She has served as guest concertmaster with the Singapore Symphony, National Arts Centre Orchestra, Tucson Symphony, Grant Park Music Festival, and Festival Napa Valley. She also performs regularly with the Philadelphia Orchestra. Yumi is currently an adjunct professor at the University of Denver’s Lamont School of Music, and she enjoys coaching and mentoring young professionals. She is actively involved in advancing the arts in her community through numerous local concerts and chamber music collaborations.
