Jessica Phillips is an experienced performer, dedicated educator, and innovative leader in the arts. She has been a member of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra clarinet section since 2001. She serves on the Graduate Studies and MAP faculties and teaches lessons specializing in E-Flat Clarinet at The Juilliard School.
Throughout her performance career, Jessica has appeared as Guest Principal Clarinet with the Chicago Symphony, as well as in performances with the Philadelphia Orchestra, Bavarian State Opera Orchestra, Mainly Mozart Festival, Lakes Area Music Festival, Orchestra of St. Luke’s, American Ballet Theater, Santa Fe Opera, and St. Bart’s Music Festival. She has served on the faculties and performed at Rutgers University Mason Gross School for the Arts, Carnegie Hall’s NYO2, Festival Napa Valley, the Pacific Music Festival in Japan, and the Verbier Festival in Switzerland. Jessica has worked closely with Backun Musical Services to promote and design products for E-Flat clarinet and has also collaborated with Backun on over twenty educational YouTube videos.
She has served on the Executive Board of New York City’s Local 802 American Federation of Musicians (AFM), the Governing Board of the International Conference of Symphonic and Opera Musicians (ICSOM), the national AFM Steering Committee for negotiations with American Motion Picture & Television Producers (AMPTP), and she continues to serve on the board of The Field and the League of American Orchestras. She has been a guest speaker, presenter, facilitator, and panelist at Sphinx Connect, the League of American Orchestras conference and Essentials of Orchestra Management, OPERA America’s Leadership Intensive, Lincoln Center’s Curriculum on Change conference, Changing the Narrative: Young Professionals Leadership Development Program, San Francisco Conservatory of Music, and ICSOM, focusing on the power of collaboration, communication, and creative, often paradigm-shifting solutions to forge meaningful change and impact in support of the arts.
Jessica received her MBA in Arts Innovation & Entrepreneurship from the Global Leaders Institute, and holds certificates in Nonprofit Arts Management from NYU, Labor Relations from Cornell, and Negotiation and Leadership & Difficult Conversations from Harvard Law School’s Program on Negotiation. She is an alumna of the League of American Orchestras program Essentials of Orchestra Management and OPERA America’s Leadership Intensive. She graduated cum laude from Barnard College, Columbia University, with a BA in Political Science and Music.
