Marriage Italian Style (Matrimonio all’Italiana), directed by Vittorio De Sica, 1964, 101 mins
Adapted from the play Filumena Marturano by Eduardo De Filippo, this romantic comedy-drama was the fourth film directed by De Sica starring Loren and the second to feature Marcello Mastroianni. Using sly humor, the film tells the story of an unorthodox romantic relationship that began outside of a Neapolitan brothel during a World War II bombing and continues in fits and starts for 22 years. Referred to as “wonderfully flamboyant” by critics at the time of its release, it garnered Academy Award nominations in 1966 for Best Foreign Language Film and Best Actress (for Loren).
