Your journey from a small town in eastern South Africa to performing on prestigious stages worldwide is truly inspiring. Could you share a bit about how your upbringing influenced your passion for music?
I can’t begin to express how grateful I am and have been. I was born into a very musical family. I got my first music lesson from my grandmother, who taught me hymns from our church. She planted the seeds that enabled me to discover the wealth of this entrusted gift inside me. This has led me on an extraordinary life journey filled with immense joy and humility, which I am eager to share with as many precious souls globally.
Your rendition of Sacred Fire at the coronation was exhilarating! How did you prepare for such a momentous performance, and what emotions were running through your mind as you stepped onto that stage?
Every invitation holds great significance for me, and I prioritize each one with utmost importance. When His Majesty invited me to participate in this once-in-alifetime occasion, it was incredibly humbling. Preparing for this event brought me pure joy and gratitude, as it offered another opportunity to share my entrusted gift with as many people as possible.
Do you have a favorite role or piece of music that holds special significance for you?
Performing the beautiful music and melodies of opera is an immense honor for me. I’ve been fortunate to portray some of the most iconic and dream roles for a soprano, including Violetta in Verdi’s La Traviata at the Paris Opera Garnier. One of the highlights of my bel canto journey was performing the title role in Donizetti’s Lucia di Lammermoor. It was also my dream to sing Donizetti’s Tudor Queens, and I’m incredibly grateful to have realized this dream with my debut in the title role of Maria Stuarda.
Your journey from initially facing challenges with your voice to becoming an internationally acclaimed soprano is one of perseverance and determination. What advice would you give to aspiring young singers who wish to share their artistry on the world stage one day?
Having a talent or gift is more than just passion or glitz or glam. It requires pure dedication. One must possess the wisdom and humility to serve not only the music but also the precious souls who attend performances. Never give up. Trust your process. Don’t compare yourself to anyone. Moreover, your team plays a crucial role in your decision-making and growth. Most importantly, there’s always the gift of joy in every experience, whether positive or challenging.
Looking ahead, are there any new artistic challenges or projects that you’re eager to pursue?
Many exciting events are coming up! I’ll be making my debut as Mimi in Puccini’s La Boheme and Magda in La Rondine. I’ll also be performing at the Champs-Élysées in Paris, at the Royal Opera House in London, at the Teatro Liceo in Barcelona, the Teatro Real in Madrid, and many more.
