Summer 2024

Features

Henry Mancini at 100

Whether it’s the irresistibly witty Pink Panther theme, the wistful “Moon River” from Breakfast at Tiffany’s, or the mod music from the TV show Peter Gunn, Henry Mancini’s beloved songs and scores are a veritable soundtrack of our lives.

Three Generations of Creativity

The world knows Sophia Loren as a larger-than-life legend — one of the greatest screen stars of all time, an icon of glamour, and an actress of remarkable range. Her seven-decade career includes the classic drama Two Women and the epic El Cid, the charming romance Marriage Italian Style, and the endearing comedy It Started in Naples.

Strong Roots

When Peter Mondavi Jr. and his brother Marc were kids, Napa Valley was home to about a dozen wineries. Today, there are more than 500. One of the most celebrated among them is Charles Krug.

Q&A with Pretty Yende

Soprano Pretty Yende’s journey is nothing short of inspiring — from her beginnings in a small South African town to gracing the world’s most prestigious stages, including her performance at King Charles III’s coronation.

In the Spirit of Collaboration

Collaboration is the soul of the performing arts, and the best collaborations are a thrilling alchemy of artists. A beautiful illustration of this is Bloquea’o, a collaboration with Pedro Osuna, SUUVI, Joan Rodriguez, and BODYTRAFFIC.

Q&A with Daniela Liebman

Twenty-one-year-old Mexican pianist Daniela Liebman, a rising star in the classical music world, is celebrated for her eloquence and poise. She has graced many prestigious stages, captivating audiences with her nuanced performances.

Ming Luke

It’s been a particularly busy season for Ming Luke, the esteemed Bay Area conductor and educator whose ability to move gracefully among ballet, opera, and symphonic settings has enriched his music-making in all those spheres.

Beyond the Stage
