David Barnett

David Barnett is a performer and teacher of both modern and historical clarinets and recorder. Based in the Bay Area, his musical interests span the gamut of medieval through contemporary. His playing has been described as "as compelling as anything since the pied piper" (San Francisco Chronicle).

Barnett was Music Director for the notorious San Francisco arts group, the Noh Oratorio Society, and with them performed the world and U.S. premieres of works by Harrison Birtwistle, Gordon Cross, Charles Shere and Richard Felciano, among others. He founded and performed numerous concerts with his period instrument ensemble, Zeitgeist 1800, and has appeared with the San Luis Obispo Mozart Festival Orchestra on clarinet and as a soloist on chalumeau. Along with fellow recorderist and composer, Tom Bickley, he performs as Three Trapped Tigers, the ensemble they created to explore repertoire from early to modern. Most recently, he has joined with soprano Lisa Delan and pianist Kevin Korth to continue his exploration of music new and old for voice, clarinet, and piano.  Barnett has recorded for the Earthbeat, Pacific Artist, and Centaur labels. Mr. Barnett performs on modern clarinets by Wurlitzer.
