Alabama native Michael Luwoye made his Broadway debut in Hamilton as the alternate for both Alexander Hamilton and Aaron Burr, and he holds the distinction of performing both roles on the same day. Prior to that, he played the role of Jacob, a Ugandan dreamer in Invisible Thread Off-Broadway, for which he received a 2016 Lucille Lortel Nomination for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Musical.
Luwoye also starred as Peter Tosh in the world premiere of Marley, a bio-musical of Bob Marley at Baltimore Center Stage. Other regional credits include roles in Cardboard Piano at the Actor’s Theatre of Louisville and Witness Uganda American Repertory Theater.
For his current performance of the titular role in the San Francisco production of Hamilton, Karen D'Souza of The Mercury News writes: “As Alexander Hamilton, Michael Luwoye burns with gravitas and ambition as the penniless and illegitimate orphan who rises to the heights of power. The formidable actor gives him a pugnacious spirit that sets fire to every scene he’s in. It's a devastatingly visceral performance.”
